Toombs County is celebrating the first graduating class of This Guy Can, a workshop series sponsored by Georgia Power and Trane Technologies that aims to increase awareness of and interest in non-traditional career pathways for males. Seventh and eighth grade students from the Vidalia Learning Center and Toombs County After School traveled to Southeastern Technical College this month to learn about five of these careers pathways, including Dental Hygiene, Cosmetology, Nursing, Business Technology, and Early Childhood Care. Participants received hands-on experience, toured each department, and learned details about each program from STC instructors and current STC students! All participants received a certificate of completion, a program T-Shirt, and an engraved water thermos during the graduation ceremony. Speakers included Helen Thomas, Special Needs Specialist at Southeastern Technical College, Senator Blake Tillery (19th District of Georgia), and Jeffrey Harden, Chief Nursing Officer at Memorial Health Meadows Hospital. After the ceremony, parents and participants enjoyed a meal in the student cafeteria.
Feedback has been very positive, so the program will be offered again in the fall.
The community looks forward to watching as this class of participants chooses their pathways and follows their dreams!
