The Georgia Department of Labor (GDOL) knows that each company looks for different skills and experience when hiring. To complement these core competencies, there are certain “soft skills” every company looks for in potential hires.
You may be asking what is soft skills, anyway? Simply put, soft skills are the personal attributes that allows us to effectively relate to others. These skills enhance our personal interactions and lead to greater job performance and satisfaction. Unlike hard skills, which are the technical and knowledge skill set we bring to our work, soft skills are interpersonal and can be applied in a broad array of situations. Soft skills encompass both personality traits, such as optimism, and abilities which can be practiced, such as empathy. Like all skills, soft skills can be learned.
The GDOL constantly hears employers indicate that there is a lack of “soft skills”. The State Labor Commissioner Mark Butler states, “While many students graduate from high school and prepare for the future with the appropriate academic credentials, some still lack the soft skills needed to succeed in today’s workforce. GeorgiaBEST gives them the chance to gain these skills and better promote themselves in the highly competitive job market that exists today.”
The GDOL wants to introduce a program to those of you who aren’t aware of GeorgiaBEST.
The GeorgiaBEST (Business Ethics Student Training) program is designed to answer some of the top concerns employers have regarding our future workforce – our students. GeorgiaBEST concentrates on teaching students the skills required to be successful in the workforce. These skills include punctuality, communication, teamwork and attitude. Students earn a GeorgiaBEST certificate through everyday observation and teacher assessment. This certificate serves as validation to employers that students have displayed strong work habits and are ready for the workforce.
